A JOURNEY OF HOPE: Growing Up with a Parent Diagnosed with Schizophrenia



My father was my world., but as I grew it became evident that my father was struggling in life as he drank and was abusive. At just twelve years old, I found the courage to help my mother seek safety in a battered women's shelter for me and my brother. My father became homeless and we were estranged for decades.

Years later, I reconnected with my father and gained access to his medical records from when I was a child. I learned that my father had been diagnosed with Schizophrenia. I gained insight to what my father was going through. This became the catalyst for my commitment to understand my father's brain disorder. Instead of letting fear or stigma define our story, I chose to educate myself about Schizophrenia and the importance of securing treatment.
